Isthmus Sailboards’ Jon Massmann tests the New 2011 Starboard iSonic 117W Carbon at the Board Test Live - Windsurfing Magazine test in AVON, NC on April 1, 2011. He used a GoPro helmet mount camera and Garmin GPS to document his testing experience and share his perspectives.
The Starboard iSonic 117W
is all about early planing and speed in moderate wind conditions. It’s incredibly light and stiff with its Carbon lay-up, yet very comfortable and efficient. The board is more rig steering oriented due to its 80.5 width that limits foot steering sensitivity. The hull is based on their ultra thin profile shaping along with the deep deck concaves to increase control, stiffness, speed, and lower center of gravity. The bottom shape has cut-outs around fin box and small cutaway along the rail for better water release and top end speed. The winds were a bit marginal when I sailed it – roughly 10-15 mph, yet I was able to achieve 25 mph on my GPS. I believe it best suits 190 lb and larger riders seeking an efficient and fast race slalom board to ride with 7.5 and larger sail sizes, or smaller riders who desire a 117 liter wide and compact planing machine. Everyone who tried this board at the board test was impressed by its performance!
